Edward returns to complete his air story

Edward Clack, a former RAF aerial photographer, who had already given a talk to

members of Southend U3A's Aviation Group, returned on Thursday 20th November

to continue the story of his adventures. In the second picture, group members

John Boote and Roy Briggs examine Edward's first camera, a Kodak Box Brownie.

Twenty years on, Southend U3A is still dynamic

THE Mayor of Southend, Cllr Mrs Daphne White, was guest of honour as Southend branch of the U3A marked its 20th anniversary with a garden party at Porters, Civic House, Southend, on Tuesday July 31 2007. In bright sunshine, 91 members were congratulated on the anniversary by Cllr White, who noted that the national U3A organisation that year was marking its 25th anniversary.

After enjoying a buffet meal, the Mayor cut a large anniversary cake, helped by John Smart, an early member of the branch and author of a brief history produced to mark the occasion.

The branch was formed in 1987 by Tony McCormack, an Open University graduate who had taken early retirement while recovering from an operation. He had become interested in the then new University of the Third Age movement for people over the age of 55 no longer working full time.

The branch is now a flourishing organisation with around 200 members. Meetings are held weekly at Westcliff Free Church. Twenty study groups, ranging from art appreciation, aviation and comparative religions to local history, painting for pleasure and photography, hold their own regular meetings. Members also visit places of interest around the East of England.
